A Technical SEO Checklist for Small Business Websites

Before you invest in content or backlinks, make sure Google can actually crawl, understand and trust your website. Here's the checklist we run on every new project.

Good content and backlinks matter, but they can't help a website that Google struggles to crawl or understand. Technical SEO is the foundation — and the good news is that most of it only needs to be done right once. This is the checklist we run on every site we launch or take over.

Crawling and indexing

  • Google Search Console is set up and the domain is verified.
  • An XML sitemap exists, lists only real, indexable pages and is submitted in Search Console.
  • robots.txt doesn't accidentally block important pages or your CSS and JavaScript.
  • Staging and test pages are set to noindex — or better, password-protected.

URLs and structure

  • URLs are short, readable and lowercase: /services/web-development/, not /?p=123.
  • Each page has exactly one version: http redirects to https, and www and non-www are consolidated.
  • Old URLs from a previous website are 301-redirected to their new equivalents.
  • Important pages are reachable within three clicks from the homepage.

Page basics

  • Every page has a unique title tag (around 50–60 characters) and meta description.
  • There is one clear <h1> per page, followed by a logical heading structure.
  • Images have descriptive file names and alt text, and are served in modern formats like WebP.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google uses real-user performance data as a ranking signal, and slow pages lose visitors anyway. Check LCP (how fast the main content appears), INP (how quickly the page reacts) and CLS (whether the layout jumps around) in PageSpeed Insights. The usual culprits are oversized images, too many plugins and third-party scripts.

Structured data

Adding schema.org markup — for example LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage or Article — helps Google understand your pages and can earn rich results in search.

Local and multilingual signals

  • Your business name, address and phone number are identical on the website and your Google Business Profile.
  • Multilingual sites use hreflang tags that point to every language version.

Run through this list once and you'll have removed most of the invisible obstacles between your website and your future customers. Want us to do it for you? Take a look at our digital marketing services.
